Our First Day Home

Collin spent the night at Grandma's house the night that we got home, so she brought him in the next morning. He was so happy and excited to be home and see Micah.

He wanted to hold him right away.

He had to have a bottle, so Mike was feeding him.
Collin wanted to help.
I was so happy to be home with my "big boy".
He wanted to take his nap with his baby brother too!
Kendra came home from school, and got her cuddle time with Micah too.

SVT and WPW

This is a link to a story about SVT and WPW, the things that Micah has been diagnosed with. Explains it really well.

Micah's First Days (Day 12)

We got to go home! They did not discharge us until 4:30 that afternoon, so it was a long trip home, but we were so happy to be on our way!

He had to do a 90 minute "carseat trend", meaning that they had to watch and monitor his oxygen levels, etc. for 90 minutes to make sure he could handle riding in his carseat for 90 minutes at a time.

He did good, but got hungry while he was in it.
The pacifier helped!
All ready to go home.
Riding peacefully.
When we got home, we had the wonderful surprise of a cleaned, decorated house with gifts on the table! Thank you for those responsible for that. :)

Micah's First Days (Days 7-11)

Day 7- They decided to back off on Micah's heart medicine a bit, because it was making part of the beat rest too long. They were still feeding him through the feeding tube because he was losing weight.
Day 8- Micah's billiruben levels were a little high, but they chose to just monitor it, as it wasn't anything to worry about too much yet. He was still losing weight. We were able to put him in his own clothes, and he looked so cute!
Day 9- Micah didn't lose as much weight as before. He was more alert and eating better.
Day 10- The feeding tube came out! Micah's billiruben levels were down. He lost his umbilical cord. I got the first picture with his eyes open.
Day 11- They said we would be able to go home the next day most likely. I have to admit, I was skeptical. They had said that we may be able to go home twice before this.

Micah's First Days (Day 6)

They took out his feeding tube that morning, only to have to put it back in because he was getting low on fluids and not eating very good. They put a holter monitor on him so that they could closely monitor his heart for 24 hours. It was kind of a rough day, because it seemed like we were taking steps back that day.

We give him 2 feedings of Similac Neosure formula a day to help him grow.

Micah's First Days (Day 4 & 5)

Collin went home on Sunday right before lunch with Grandma and Papa Bley. Kendra stayed an extra day and went home on Monday with Grandma Margaret.

Happy big sister and brother.

Collin telling Micah good-bye one last time.

After they left, we ordered lunch and had it outside on the rooftop garden. Kendra wanted her picture taken by the pond.
Mike read a story to Kendra in the NICU.
On Monday, they got him moved into a crib from the incubator....a step in the right direction! Also, his heart rate went down around 9:30 in the morning with a new medicine! We went out for lunch at Applebee's and did a little shopping. It was so good to get out for a little bit. Kendra gave him the stuffed Tigger above his crib. They also took out his IV tube that night.

Micah's First Days (Day 3)

I was dismissed from the hospital Saturday morning, and we moved to a suite that was in the hospital building so that we would be close to Micah. His heart rate still had not gone down. They let me feed him for the first time that day. The grandparents brought the kids down for a visit, and it was so good to see them and be with them, although the good-byes were hard later. We had supper together.
Kendra held her new baby brother. She held him every chance she got.
Proud big sister and brother. Collin had lots of questions about everything.

Micah's First Days (Day 2)

Day 2- Micah's heart rate was still high. They had tried one medicine, and it had not done anything. They wanted to give it 48 hours to see if it would work before trying another one. We finally got to hold him for a little bit. I cried. :)

I know...I look lovely in my pajamas, and my hair is a mess due to not having a hairbrush at the hospital. It was just so great to hold him!

Wires and tubes everywhere.
Look at his tiny hands!
Mike's turn.
Sleeping baby.

Micah's First Days (Day 1)

I journaled everything while we were in Omaha, because I was afraid I would forget what happened when if I didn't. So, I am going by my pictures and journaling to tell the story of Micah's first days.
Micah Carter was born at 12:33 CT on 9-9-10 after an ambulance ride from McCook to Omaha, and a little help with induction. I was told two or three times that it may turn into a c-section, but was able to avoid that. Yay! He was 5 weeks early, but weighed 5 lbs 15 oz, and had a healthy set of lungs! They let me hold him for a moment, and then he headed to the NICU so that they could take care of him.

When I was able to go see him later that day, it was a shock to see him hooked up to all kinds of things and lots of people watching him. He was diagnosed with SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia) and his heart rate was 200 bpm or more and would not go down. They put him on some medicine to try to bring the heart rate down.

We were not able to hold him that first day, but they did let us give him a sponge bath.

1 Week Old

Micah was one week old yesterday. They let us start putting his own clothes on, so I had to get a picture of him in his sleeper. He was down to 5 pounds 14 ounces yesterday. They want him to gain steadily before they send us home. He is really cuddly, and we are enjoying time with him when we can.

Baby Picture

The upside to having to go to the doctor for ultrasound and monitoring twice a week is that I get to see baby that often! He has been putting his toes in his mouth quite a bit. She gave me a picture of it the other day. It is harder to see in the picture than on the screen to me, but thought I'd post it here. :)

34 Weeks 3 Days

I went out to Renee's house today to go through baby clothes, and bring them home...it was fun! She took a couple of pictures for me while there. Getting very anxious for this baby to get here!
